Right before the Christmas, 1965 release of “Do Not Disturb”, Fox executive Richard Zanuck celebrated that the film’s star, Doris Day was the only surefire actress at the box-office in Hollywood. Doris Day movies made money and the public flocked to inspect Miss Day whenever a unusual film was released. “Disturb” continued that pattern, earning 20th Century Fox a nice profit although not quite in the league of earlier and some latter Day films. Nevertheless, it kept Miss Day in the box-office top ten. The 1965 list, released moral after this film’s release, showed her the top female star at the box-office, placing third on the list.

“Do Not Disturb” is lightweight, harmless, funny fluff. It is saved by some vast production values including the cinematography of Oscar winner, Leon Shamroy, Miss Day’s energetic performance and some of the most delicate outfits the star has ever musty including a drop-dead magnificent evening gown that clearly indicates that Miss Day was one of the silver screen’s sexiest actresses.

Unfortunately the writing material given the gifted star doesn’t give her the opportunities she deserves to shine as the skilled comical she has proven to be repeatedly. However, she makes the most of what is available.

The film represents her first on-screen teaming with Rod Taylor. They work well together although the chemistry they prove the following year in MGM’s hilarious “Glass Bottom Boat” isn’t evidenced.

The opening credits are cute, the title song is catchy and rendered expertly by Miss Day. The supporting cast are all suited and features some of Hollywood’s best veterans.

The space about a American couple adjusting to life in London has been done to death previously. A couple of sequences are very comic, however Director Ralph Levy whose greatest fame was helming the hit Burns and Allen series on television in the 50′s, is not skillful enough to milk all the laughs from the region. A Norman Jewison would probably have made it seem funnier.

All this aside, Miss Day is luscious and there are some laughs, guffaws and chuckles throughout and the whole thing is sparkling to notice at.

Time Magazine in reviewing the film referred to it as “Day’s Hard Night”. It’s better than they would lead you to own.

If your expectations are not for another “Thrill of It All” or “Pillow Talk”, “Do Not Disturb” will be a suitable method to pass a couple of hours.

It’s unbelievable to peep, finally, this Doris Day comedy on DVD. The formula plays remarkable like the 1963 “Go Over, Darling”, but that formula works, and changing it up with recent state incidents, locales, stars and designs makes “Do Not Disturb” a vintage portion of scrumptious entertainemt. Day is so winning and acts with such effortless ease, that we go moral along with the humorous sitcom site devices. In fact, we like them because she brings reality to even the most hackneyed gags. As usual, Day is surrounded by acting and production pros who manufacture the proceedings all the more toothsome because we don’t pains that any element of the film is going to topple apart. “Do Not Disturb” takes us to the far-off lands of England and France via 20th Century Fox’s backlot, and wraps everything visual with big style. The costumes for Day are particularly lavish here, including a spectacular floor length, backless, sequined tangerine gown – which she fills with utterly palatable femininity. Rod Taylor is a attractive co-star (he’s even better with her in 1966′s “Glass Bottom Boat”), Hermione Baddeley gets to glam it up as a genteel British countrywoman, and Sergio Fantoni makes a terrific romantic foil. Lots of fizzy fun, tall cast and production fabricate this a film that can be viewed repeatedly as the type of romantic comedy that simply could not be made any longer.

It may have been created [by the producers of "Batman: The Engrossing Series" at the question of Warner Bros.] to attract a current generation of viewers by injecting the unlit detective with unusual, younger blood, but the futuristic “Batman Beyond” (like Batman: TAS) was a present for Batfans of all ages. Ironically, mighty of Batman Beyond’s charm can be attributed to the generation gap between Terry and Bruce as displayed in “Slow Man’s Hand” where they clash over their pursuit of the Royal Flush Gang. One of whom (Melanie/Ten) Terry has romantic feelings for and later reluctantly places into police custody. “This sort of thing ever happen to you?,” Terry asks. Bruce warmly smiles with “Let me grunt you about a woman named Selina Kyle.” Gargantuan stuff. Batman Beyond was a wintry series that featured the phenomenal declare talents of Will Friedle (Boy Meets World), Kevin Conroy (Batman: TAS), Lauren Tom (Superman: TAS), Teri Garr (Mr. Mom), and Sherman Howard (Superboy) ; gracious scripts; frenetic action; and one of TV’s coolest opening main titles; Not to mention sensational main title and fetch music by Kristopher Carter.

Highly Recommended!

A long time coming, I’m so happy Warner Bros has finally decided to give us box sets of this reveal. We glean all 13 season 1 episodes here, which introduce us to the current Batman Terry McGinnis, and also most of his major foes: Affirm, Spellbinder, Curare, Inque, a fresh Royal Flush Gang, and also Derek Powers/Blight, the show’s Lex Luthor equivalent. Also famous are revelations to past Batman villains, namely Mr. Freeze and Bane.

If you liked the original captivating Batman volume sets, Batman Beyond is worth checking out. Moral it’s a current choose on Batman, but it’s also one that adds to the continuity of the classic shows and portrays the same customary sensabilities, inviting dialogue, and fun action we got before. Broken-down Bruce Wayne is a cranky extension of his younger self, and his relationship with Terry is a fresh dynamic not seen with the previous Robins or Batgirl. Considering that this series originated as KidsWB wanting to sell more toys and appeal to “younger demographics,” it says something that not only does this demonstrate not end the Batman legacy, but in fact enriches it and gives the Timm/Dini/Burnett collaboration something they can proudly call their possess.

This dwelling will include commentaries, interviews, and even a music-only track. I should impress that this station only includes 1 episode that has not been released to dvd in some build so far. If you bought the previous releases, you technically occupy most of the screech already. However, having a box location is such a nice diagram to absorb this series that I’d recommend you sell those discs off in preparation for this one and prepare for Batman…Beyond.

I played the role of Marshallene in “Urban Cowboy” and so to reply one of your reviewers, what was Sissy’s last name? well here is the plot it was. We didn’t have last names; at least not assigned to us when we got our scripts. I actually made mine up when I needed one snappy in the Dolly Parton Look-a-like contest. You might remove that Marshallene was caught in the trailer with Wes, the convict. This film is such a “cult popular” that it plays every day somewhere;my residuals attest to the fact that this film is loved by many. It made a fashion statement, (people went out and bought jeans and hats and boot and belts) it gave a boost to the Club business – where more and more C/W clubs sprang up all over the country and Canada. I had a motor coach bus and opened shows for Mickey Gilley and Johnny Lee and others for about 8 years – well into the slow 80′s. It was a magical time for all of us! It was a fun time for me and for fans. This movie is legendary and will last well beyond. Hope you indulge in viewing it as distinguished as I enjoyed playing in it.By the device, there are a lot of versions of it. The edited for TV version actually is so different – (I have several more scenes in it) – and it shows Sissy and Bud actually”dating” before they got married. The scenes were shot on dwelling on the grass of Buffalo Bayou in Houston, Texas. I actually like that version because the unusual had them meeting one night at Gilley’s and getting married the next afternoon!!!Connie Hanson

Although many folks laught this flick off, I have to admit that I am extremely fond of “Urban Cowboy.” My wife and I view it unbiased about every time it comes on television. Granted, Bud slaps around Sissy and that may turn off some folks, but deep inside, there is more care for between those characters than most of the couples in film and television these days.

With a giant honky-tonk as the significant setting, you catch the expected rowdy crowds and rambunctious country music needed to region the stage. The entire memoir revolves around the trials and tribulations of a young couple brought together by the bull…mechanical bull that is, and how they’re almost torn apart by it. They gain “Bud” and “Sissy” license plates for Bud’s truck. They are gratified over a modern trailer house. They are pure white trash, and I love’em for it. Intelligent characters such as Bud’s aunt and uncle, Gator, the ex-con Wes, Jessie, Mickey Gilley and even the Charlie Daniel’s Band form for a ample movie. You couldn’t do a film about a honky-tonk these days with characters like that. First of all, you’d inflame someone for making the working man watch like an idiot. Secondly, people will sob about spousal abuse. Lastly, there aren’t many precise country stars like they had serve in those days. Can you imagine Tim McGraw onstage with succor hair coming out of his vest instead of the incomparable Johnny Lee? I mediate not.

Others say the acting is unpleasant, that may be, but it is so awful that it is unbelievable to peep on conceal. Travolta’s bathtub scene where he fusses at Sissy(Debra Winger) for not being home when he needs her is fair hilarious. Winger is at her sexiest as the somewhat tomboyish Sissy. She’s probably the main reason I witness this movie over and over. When Bud’s aunt enters the Dolly Parton lookalike contest, her entire character becomes the focus of the film for a few brief, silly moments. Barry Corbin was perfectly cast as Bud’s well-meaning uncle. You couldn’t have picked a better cast.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Urban Cowboy! Click Here

Also, the characters are precise. Admit it, you’ve seen a drunk guy at the local bar tumble off of his barstool. In this movie, Gator objective happens to tumble off of a mechanical bull. There are always one or two fights at the bar. Also, I’ve seen plenty of exasperated drunks at the local Pitt Grill(an after-honky-tonk hangout with a tall breakfast buffett at 3AM) throw fits like Bud did when Sissy gets a hat tipped to her by Wes.

Watch this movie for the time tear it is. It’s a perfect rainy-day, holdin’ you’re better half type of movie. Add it to your collection now.

I have to admit that I really didn’t know too worthy about this anime. After watching “Submarine 707R”, I wanted to peruse another anime that dealt with the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force and another series that features the latest in technology of the military carried out on sea. Especially since the modern author of the manga series, Kawaguchi Kaiji was the current author of the classic anime OAV “Tranquil Service”.

So, what better than to gaze the anime series “Zipang”, a series that is based on an ongoing (and award winning) manga series by Kawaguchi Kaiji. The manga was made into a 26-episode TV series in 2004 and was released on DVD by Geneon in 2006.

The storyline is about the latest in Japanese technology, the recent battlecruiser known as the Mirai. The Mirai and the crew of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force is off to Pearl Harbor to meet up with the US for training but during their depart to Japan, they eye a weird occurence with the skies and the Mirai is hit by a scamper of lighting. Next thing you know, the Mirai and its crew are transported benefit to 1942 during World War II.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Zipang: Future Shock, Vol. 1! Click Here

The main storyline focuses on three stop friends and members of the SDF who are stationed on the Mirai:

Kadomatsu Yosuke – Second in Articulate of the Mirai and has a sense of duty to protect people. Yosuke’s actions is what changes the course of history when he rescues an Imperial Japanese Navy Commissioned Officer Kusaka Izumi. A man who should of perished in battle.

Kikuchi Masayuki – Gunnery officer and third in articulate and in the beginning of the anime series, is totally against getting enthusiastic in dread that the Mirai and crew could change history.

Oguri Kouhei – Navigation officer and shares the duty of third in notify with Kikuchi. Of the three best friends, Oguri is the most outspoken.

Throughout the series, you are introduced to several other characters in the Mirai such as Captain Umezu Saburo and Lt. and Mirai medic, Momoi Sachiko.

In episode 1, “The Mirai Sets Coast”, the series features how the Mirai is transported sixty years into the past and try to understand what happened to them.

In episode 2, “Midway”, fortunately the Mirai has a history buff in its crew who tells them that on that day, June 4, 1942 is the Battle of Midway in which the Americans destroyed the Japanese speedily. Of course, the Mirai, has the power to possibly establish the Japanese quick but under Kikuchi’s logic, the Mirai and its crew should not interfere with history and should net a plan to fetch succor home.

In episode 3, “Drifters”, the crew debate to attach a Japanese plane that has a survivor. Due to Kadomatsu’s sense of protecting lives, he saves the survivor (Kusaka Izumi) who happens to be an officer of the Imperial Navy. Kikuchi knows by Kadomatsu’s action, history will now be changed.

In episode 4, “Mirai’s Battle”, the Mirai returns to the place they where they were transported attend in time. While they wait to peek if anything will happen to them, the Mirai is under attack by an American submarine. Of course, with technology on their side, the Mirai is able to rush from the torpedo’s but one of Kikuchi’s men who is caught up of having to resolve if Japan should procure their revenge on the Americans, fires a missle on his have against the submarine. Now the Mirai must choose whether or not they should attack the Americans or ruin the missle and intelligent the Americans will relay info. about what they learned about the Mirai befriend to their headquarters.

Overall, the series is in respectable hands with Furuhashi Kazuhiro as director. Furuhashi has been a director for series like “Urusei Yatsura”, “You’re Under Arrest”, “Getbackers” and more. Character designer Umakoshi Yoshihiko created character designs for anime series such as “Street Fighter”, “Berserk” and “Air Master” and Takeda Yuichiro who wrote the screenplay will be known for his work on the multi-anime series “Banner of the Stars”.

VIDEO:

The video is featured in 16:9 and felt the animation looked titanic. With the waves of the ocean that ship makes, to the skies brilliantly painted to showcase a storm or a sunny day. The animation was very well done and the colors showcasing the darkness inside the Mirai to outdoor missions were well done. Character designs were well done as well.

AUDIO:

The audio is in Japanese Dolby Digital 2.0 and I watched both the Japanese and English dub versions and both were well done. It would have been icy if the series was digital 5.1 to showcase the sound of the missiles and blasts but all in all, dialogue was definite and had no problems with it.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

There wasn’t really any special features except three Geneon trailers and a shipshape opening and ending theme for the series.

I have to admit that “Zipang” features an involving understanding of time proceed and if given the opportunity to have original technology, would you encourage your countrymen from a different era or not disrupt history and you can study it among the crew of the Mirai. Loyalty to their country but at the same time, those who don’t know what achieve by saving the Imperial Army will do in their timeline.

I will say that I am aware that the series ends with a cliffhanger and because the manga series is unruffled ongoing, it’ll probably be quite sometime before another anime series is created or if it is ever created.

As for the anime, there are a total of seven volumes and vol. 1 can be found aesthetic inexpensively but finding the other volumes online is hit or miss and some are unexcited being sold for regular label. I hope there will be a complete collection out for “Zipang” with the team up of Geneon and Funimation.

But overall, watching the first volume was quite keen and left me wanting more.

A few things that I like about this anime:

The characters are very valid, and some of the just delemas they have are piquant. There is a sense of stout confussion and a bit of dread among the crew also which fits well with the events of the memoir.

The military weapons and systems they employ in the series are accuratly portrayed also. This series shows how powerfull a fresh day destroyer truly is.

I would recommend this series strongly to anyone enthusiastic in ww2 history . Even if your not into history it’s a big fable that most will appreciate.

I remember loving this TV reveal when I was very young and so I approached re-viewing it 40 years later with considerable trepidation because I was not clear how it would occupy up. I didnt remember this sitcom being heavy with jokes and punchlines, so I tremulous that it might have conventional badly. I’m very relieved to say that the 30 episodes in this status are extraordinary and the entire cast is restrained, believable and talented. This is one of those heart-warmer comedies that aren’t made any more. Its humor comes from the situations rather than a goofy setup or (worse yet) impossibly adult wisecracks coming out of the mouths of young children. When bachelor Bill Davis (Brian Keith) inherits the three children of his behind brother and sister-in-law (Anissa Jones, Johnnie Whittaker and Kathy Garver), he and his butler (er “gentleman’s gentleman, Mr. French, played by Sebastian Cabot) secure themselves suddenly having to raise three kids. Be forewarned, the first few episodes are steady tear-jerkers as the kids continually maintain they will be sent away to another relative. The DVD’s recount is vibrant–it was one of the first color TV shows besides BONANZA– and the stories are lively.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Family Affair – Season 1! Click Here

The only confusing fragment of the DVD experience is that each episode begins with a pre-opening credits sequence–sometimes the scene that plays is a scene you’ll sight later in the episode and sometimes its the sincere beginning of the episode, so don’t be too expeditiously to bustle past the opening sequence. The DVD doesn’t have chapter breaks within each episode. Sadly, there’s no commentaries (only Garver and Whittaker are peaceful alive from the core cast) but on the final disk, Garver hosts a special feature that takes you unhurried the scenes of the point to and she’s objective as effusive and fine as she was when she was first cast in the show–she was 18 when she was cast as 15-year-old Sissy. She also explains how Brian Keith agreed to do the TV display as long as he could film all his scenes one proper after another (distinguished the design Fred MacMurray did on MY THREE SONS), so he would only have to commit to a few months filming a TV reveal rather than a distinguished lengthier filming period. This meant that many of the cast filmed their reaction shots to sequences weeks later. Even with this knowldge, its almost impossible to state any outlandish continuity; it plays seemlessly–which is certainly high praise for William D. Russell, who directed all by the first episode.

Guests stars during this first season (1966) includes Myrna Loy, with reoccurring appearnaces by Heather Angel as another nanny, Miss Faversham. John Williams appears in episodes 18–26 as Mr French’s brother, who looks after the family when his brother is called away (Cabot was ill at the time–can anyone account for why Cabot is wearing a bandage on his hand for almost half of the first season’s episodes? ) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Family Affair – Season 1! Click Here

Best episodes for season one include: the first reveal, “Buffy”; “Occupy Two Aspirin” (ep #11, when Uncle Bill is in Mexico and Fench gets the flu) ; “The Thursday Man” (ep #13, which deepens the characters of Sissy and Mr French) ; “All Around the Town” (ep #17, where the twins gather lost in the city) ; and “Once In Worship With Buffy” (ep #21 when Aunt Fran returns and wants Buffy and Sissy to arrive live with her) .

This is a DVD plot well worth owning.

NOTE: One of the other reviews posted on Amazon complained that there was no list of the episodes on each disk. My dwelling contained a glossy insert that listed all teh shows and eminent which disk they were on. Maybe it was left out of his state. (Although, thanks for the salubrious list of season one’s episodes.)

Brian Keith and the whole cast made this indicate a winner. It was laughable and the whole family could study. I am overjoyed that this and other shows of the 60′s are being released on DVD. It gives me something to spy. TV has lost it’s innocence.

I’ll initiate by saying that I watched this anime on a whim. I hadn’t heard great about it, and what I did hear about it didn’t perform it seem worth the time. I finaly got the opportunity to check it out, and boy am I contented. Coyote Ragtime indicate is a serious action anime. It’s like Oceans Eleven meets Cowboy Bebop meets Point Fracture. There is action every single step of the design. There are only 12 episodes in the series but they feel like they are an hour long each because so mighty happens in one episode. The tale mainly focuses on a bandit named Mister and his quest to fetch the esteem of his long time friend.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Coyote Ragtime Show: Complete Box Set! Click Here

The twist of the tale is that he is a bandit seeking cherish, but this adore he is after is really the inheritance that was left slack for the daughter of his slack friend that whom was left to his care. Throughout the myth you glean to spy that there is honor amongst these theives and that they value the bonds they section over the loot that they buy.

The anime artwork is salubrious, and for the most portion the characters have been portrayed very well. The area is what makes coyote ragtime worth watching. In this anime you don’t have the typical cop fling scenario. In this one it’s a gang of bandits running from an overly obsessive federal agent, and a indignant woman with her army of soldiers and android assasins. It’s not so great a 12 episode gun amble seen, when you fetch to behold at each character and the relationships they have with one another. My only predicament with the anime is that it doesn’t point to grand the motives leisurely the villian “Mother”. She commands an endless army of troopers and android assasins, but you know limited about where she came from or why she is doing what she does. She really is a mystery to the ruin. That was the biggest tell I had with the anime. Other than that it was a gargantuan series to notice. Mostly the Coyote gang win into impossible situations and your always asking yourself “how are they going to overcome this” as you sit through all 12 episodes. I really reccomend this if your looking for a excellent action anime. It’s short, but for the action and myth its well worth it!

If you’ve seen Outlaw star than you’ll probably like this series as well short as it was. The series follows the adventure of a group of pirates known as Coyotes. The characters are Mister(An passe time place pirate known throughout the galaxy for pulling off incredible capers), Franca Dockley(The young daughter of the most eminent pirate who was known as Pirate King Bruce but was betrayed and killed by someone he knew), Katana(The Coyote’s pilot and technician), Bishop(An intellectual hacker), and along the draw the coyote’s team up with another friend of Pirate King Bruce Swamp Gordon(A old pirate now turned angelic preacher) . Also in the series you have two females one a federal agent and her naive helper trying to track down and arrest the coyotes, and than you have the main villain Madame Marciano who has a shadowy past with Mister and has a horrendous amount of abominate for Mister and was the one who killed Pirate King Bruce. What also gave the series a lot of action were the twelve android sisters who are named after the months of the year as well who have unwavering devotion and loyalty to their “Mother Marciano”. The series is mostly about trying to gain the money that the pirate king stole from the galaxy bank and trying to regain to it first, of course there are a few side story-plots as well but you’ll probably won’t really care to powerful for those as you’re going to be more alive to in the confrontation between Mister and Madame Marciano. The video is obvious and curious which you inquire of for unusual animes and the stammer cast for the Japanese/English cast did a advantageous job. The series is only twelve episodes and for the brand a miniature iffy but if you like sci-fi action animes this one won’t disappoint….

As they are intent to point out, this is an overview of the career of Monty Python’s Flying Circus from the point of understanding of the five surviving members of the team. The various members are interviewed separately (except for some bits from an interview of Terry Jones and Michael Palin as they capture a issue to Aardman Animations, Prick Park’s studio) . Together they direct the fable of the team from their individual childhood’s to the point to.

If you admire all things Python, this is a immense device to work through their career from the first episodes of MONTY PYTHON until the point to, with their explanation of why there will be no fresh Monty Python projects featuring the final five. I learned a lot of unusual things about them and loved hearing them all talk about their various joint projects. For instance, I was not aware that John Cleese originally wanted to play Brian in LIFE OF BRIAN, but was talked out of it by the other members.

My only two complaints about the position are that many of the interviews with non-Pythons were sometimes not terribly illuminating. Did we really need any contributions from Russell Designate (he remains a mystery to me – the next fascinating thing that I hear coming from his mouth will be the first enchanting thing I hear coming from his mouth)? My other complaint comes from the status. There were not very many involving special features. We do accumulate extended interviews and several of their most illustrious clips from the present. I saw this on Blu-ray and I was mildly disappointed with the visual quality of the clips (concept definitely not the documentary) . If the transfers are not any better than this, then I will certainly not be getting MONTY PYTHON on Blu-ray when that comes out. Hopefully they did not do their best work on the transfers. I remain hopeful that they can do current transfers that would explain doing Blu-ray editions. That aside, let me point out what a large week it was for Blu-ray. There were three major current Blu-ray releases that drew my attention: this plot, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: THE Understanding, and THE PRISONER. All three were simply outstanding releases. You simply don’t glean many weeks this captivating, an embarrassment of riches.

I’ve seen I contemplate every Python documentary ever produced, the best composed being the one produced by the BBC roughly 10 years ago which in the UK was hosted by “the boys” (but in the USA on A+E was reduce up with fresh hosted footage by Meatloaf of all people…) In ANY case, I had high hopes for this, and my runt hopes were shattered by a very unfunny opening by a “lawyer’s disclaimer” then another 2 minutes wasted with a novel vocal to the Life of Brian theme song with witless unique lyrics. This MIGHT be current material by the Pythons but considering it’s quality, I doubt it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Monty Python: Almost The Truth! Click Here

As for the rest of the documentary, there’s very VERY itsy-bitsy here that hasn’t been seen in the previous extensive one from 10 years prior, nor from the “Before” and “After” Python documentaries which can be found on a 2 dvd A+E situation. I didn’t want some dry, talking head prove of the most influential comedy group of the 20th century, but I would have preferred that to a documentary produced and linked by NON Pythons trying to approach up to their level, and causing nothing but ulcers to the audience in the process. Perhaps to people completely ignorant to Python, they’ll adore this, to me, a completest, this is no longer in my collection because it’s redundant and not as qualified.

Frederico Fellini’s masterwork 8 ½ is difficult to arrive largely because of its reputation. Many critics also plot that the film is so complex that it requires multiple viewings to understand, and this is likely to intimidate many viewers. But the truth is that, in spite of its surrealistic flourishes, 8 ½ is more straight-forward than its reputation might lead you to bear.

The storyline itself is very simple. A celebrated director is preparing a unique film, but finds himself suffering from creative block: he is obsessed by, loves, and feels unending frustration with both art and women, and his attention and ambition flies in so many different directions that he is suddenly incapable of focusing on one possibility lest he relate all others. With deadlines approaching the cast and crew topple upon him demanding information about the film-information that the director does not have because he finds himself incapable of making an artistic choice.

What makes the film racy is the plan in which Fellini ultimately transforms the film as a whole into a commentary on the nature of creativity, art, mid-life crisis, and the battle of the sexes. Throughout the film, the director dreams dreams, has fantasies, and recalls his childhood-and this internal life is presented on the cloak with the same sense of reality as reality itself. The staging of the various shots is unique; one is seldom aware that the characters have slipped into a dream, fantasy, or memory until one is well into the scene, and as the film progresses the lines between external life and internal conception become increasingly blurred, with Fellini giving as great (if not more) importance to fantasy as to fact.

The performances and the cinematography are key to the film’s success. Even when the film becomes surrealistic, extraordinary, the actors compose very realistically and the cinematography presents the scene in keeping with what we understand to be the reality of the characters lives and relationships. At the same time, however, the film has a remarkably poetic quality, a visual fluidity and beauty that transforms even the most ordinary events into something slightly tinged by a dream-like quality. Marcello Mastroianni offers a his greatest performance here, a shapely mixture of desperation and ennui, and he is exceptionally well supported by a cast that includes Claudia Cardinale, Anouk Aimee, and a host of other notables.

I would wait on people not to be intimidated by the film’s reputation, for its issue can be fleet grasped, and when critics dwelling the film requires repeated viewing what they actually seem to mean is that the film holds up extremely well to repeated viewing; each time it is seen, one finds more and more to be pleased and to spy. Even so, I would be amiss if I did not point out that people who consume a cinema of neat site lines and who disfavor ambiguity or the necessity of interpreting train will probably hate 8 ½ a enormous deal; if you are risky in your taste on these points you would do well to rent or borrow the film before making a engage. For all others: strongly, strongly recommended.

The most definite achievement in 8 1/2, Fellini’s mind-boggling fragment of self-examination, is its valorous mixture of dreams and reality in order to explain the protagonist Guido’s whimsical mind spot. Dream sequences advance and go without warning, depicting Guido’s distress, yearning, frustration, guilt that can pop up at any instant. The first time we glimpse Guido’s face, it is his mirror image, hinting to us the unreality we are about to face. Some of the dream sequences have a Bunuel-like surrealism. Some of them, however, blend almost seamlessly into scenes of reality, intentionally confounding us. Some are nightmarish, yet some are warm and hopeful. Some are brief flights of care for, and some are lengthy, explain, wild visions that believe Guido’s heightened sense of confusion and horror. Although the film is often called the best film ever made about a filmmaker, its theme is universal in that it is a shimmering picturization of a person’s (and by extension, any person’s) mind, which is often frightened by the past, tormented by the point to, and shocked about the future and the unknown…

The original Criterion DVD of 8 1/2 has a comely video transfer. A frame-by-frame cleanup of the relate has been done, so this DVD is significantly better-looking than Criterion’s laserdisc version in 1989. There are momentary freeze frames during the opening scene, but since they also appeared on the LD, I capture they are normal. The 1.0 mono audio track is indistinguishable in quality from that on the LD — it is mostly well-organized and spirited, although loud sound shows some distortion. The image is anamorphic. The disc is region-free. The audio is supported by newly-translated optional English subtitles.

There is one microscopic discrepancy between the LD and the DVD. The LD contained the American release version of the film in which some scenes, such as the one in which Guido first meets his wife, had altered music cues. The DVD, however, is the recent Italian version, retaining all of its recent music.

The DVD’s audio commentary comprises of scene-specific comments (whose authorship is unclear), and additional comments from critic Gideon Bachmann and NYU professor Antonio Monda. The result is a fair well-rounded audio essay covering the film’s concept, production details, themes, and artistic significance, as well as personal recollections, anecdotes, and abandoned concepts and scenes. Other extras include two 1-hour films on the filmmakers. The first is “Fellini: A Director’s Notebook”, directed by and starring Fellini himself. It is a sort of Fellini-style DAY FOR NIGHT, a fictional, somewhat laughable memoir of how the director goes about making a film. The video/audio quality of this portion is dreadful, and there are no subtitles or closed captioning. The second film is a documentary made by German filmmakers in 1993 titled “Nino Rota: Between Cinema and Concert”. It offers an intimate yet enigmatic portrayal of Nino Rota through his personal recordings, film footage of him working with Fellini, clips of some early films scored by Rota, and interviews of his associates and students. One segment is about how Rota recycled his bag from the 1957 film FORTUNELLA to originate the theme for THE GODFATHER, an act that would cost him the Oscar nomination. The DVD extras also include 3 current interviews. Sandra Milo speaks candidly about her experiences, both personal and professional, with Fellini. Linda Wertmuller lavishes praises on Fellini’s genius while offering a arresting appraisal of Fellini’s psychology that figures prominently in 8 1/2. And Vittorio Storaro pays tributes to the achievements of 8 1/2′s cinematographer, Gianni di Venanzo. Rounding out the extras are 100 or so calm photos from the dwelling of the film, some of which were taken from deleted scenes.

In 2004, the Student Body Council at Utah Valley Space College (UVSC) decided to invite Michael Moore to their campus to bid. It was, after all, an election year, and in notion of the recently released film “Fahrenheit 9/11″ Moore seemed to be an appropriate and timely choice. Moore’s $40,000 speaker’s fee would be easily offset by tag sales. Simple, apt? … Well, deem again. Moore’s invitation to thunder at UVSC sparked an incredibly frightening chain of events chronicled by the perceptive explore of first time filmmaker, Steven Greenstreet.

Greenstreet recorded events as the spot at UVSC became hideous. Student petitions circulated, demonstrations took location, and local Mormon, Kay Anderson, pulled out all the stops to finish his goal of canceling Moore’s engagement. Anderson felt that Moore did not relate the values of his community, and he was factual about that. In a site where the population is 75% Mormon, and Republicans outnumber Democrats at the rate of 12:1, Moore’s opinions don’t exactly mesh with the majority. Few people, however will go quite as far as Anderson–offering a $25,000 cheque to murder Moore and eventually sinking to suing the Student Body.

Conservative talk note host Sean Hannity is invited to UVSC in an attempt to attend ‘balance’ the status. Hannity’s engagement was supposedly ‘free’, but since he demanded a private jet, his speaking engagement (which was paid for by the college) cost several thousands more than Moore’s–an irony that seems to sprint those who protested the money spent on Michael Moore.

“The Divided Spot” is a microcosm for politics in America–and while it’s not quite this monstrous in most towns, America is politically–a divided nation. In Orem, Utah with the imminent visit from Moore, the accurate divide of politics became vulgar. First Amendment rights were severely threatened when self-appointed Dodge City Marshals of Morality tried to block Moore’s visit honest because they didn’t like what he had to say. The documentary captures the emotionally charged atmosphere on campus as sides clash. Those who fight for Moore’s presence glance it as a battle for First Amendment rights–while those who are opposed to Moore argue that his presence brings “hatred and filth.” As emotions are unleashed and tempers flare, mettlesome professors try to insist while the crowd heckles and boos, and radio host Sean Hannity humiliates a young man who had the courage to admit he was a liberal–well so great for Free Speech. And throughout this entire, uncouth mess Student Body President Jim Bassi and Vice President Joe Vogel (both customary Mormon missionaries) valiantly attempt to possess their equilibrium in the volatile site on campus.

“This Divided Position” is highly consuming and yet also profoundly disturbing. Watching the events in Orem, Utah is a helpful reminder for everyone that we cannot allow others to beget legal judgments about what we can look, hear, or read, and while a war rages in Iraq to supposedly invent democracy in that nation, perhaps we should danger a bit more about what’s taking dwelling under our noses. The DVD offers extensive extras–interviews and deleted scenes, “The Resignation”, Kay Anderson ‘uncut’, additional coverage of Michael Moore, a music video, and audio commentary–displacedhuman

In 1844, Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints (LDS) was murdered by religious bigots. His followers moved to Utah, where 75% of the state’s population today subscribes to this idea. They are mostly republican, outnumbering democrats or liberals by twelve to one.

The Divided Region brings us to 2004 where two members of the student government at the Utah Valley Place College decided to invite Michael Moore to vow on campus before the November presidential election. The fees for Moore’s visit would be $40,000 for which advanced stamp sales have already insured a profit. When the invitation was made, the uproar began.

Students opposed to the political views of the controversial filmmaker started drawing petitions to have the invitation rescinded. They never claimed that it was about Moore’s politics, but how the money was spent. They have the befriend of Kay Anderson, a local businessman in the Oram, Utah community. Anderson seems to delight being in the spotlight even as students challenge his opposition, and derive him repeatedly contradicting himself. (A trailer to this shows the students lampooning him mercilessly, which draws chuckles from the man who gives every appearance of being a self-righteous bigot and hypocritical throwback to the 1950′s) . Students counter Anderson’s argument by asking why it is so significant keeping someone out, which is the same reason the LDS sought refuge by immigrating to Utah.

Conservative students invite ultraconservative Sean Hannity to command at the school, days ahead of Moore. He agrees to do it free, unprejudiced so long as they pay his expenses and the cost of flying by private jet. Cost: $50,000.

Watching Hannity was perhaps the most difficult viewing of this chronicle. His patronization of the crowd and condescension was nauseating. He humiliated a liberal in the audience, and on stage while carefully keeping the microphone from him. He summoned other liberals by calling them, as he would call for a house pet. Moore follows several days later, also to a sell-out crowd, extolling the courage of the student body president, Jim Bassi and Vice President Joe Vogel, who secure themselves in a lawsuit filed for spite by fellow Mormon, Kay Anderson.

This was surprisingly engrossing and remarkable. It was terrifying, and disgusting to peer Kay Anderson completely contradict his Christian principles and American ideals, saying the community could ignore the first amendment rights of other Americans by keeping them from speaking in his town or local college. Smart Hannity’s routine, I have gained a unusual level of contempt for this conceited prima donna. Yet, it was refreshing to witness college students remain ever mindful of their civic obligation to protect the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens.

This was a microcosm of division that has permeated across our land, hence the title, “This Divided Situation.” Another lesson to be learned from this is that civil rights can always be taken away or challenged by rationalization by anyone in the majority, liberal or conservative, and that tyranny can appear in the obtain of self-righteousness, misdirection, and under the cover of patriotism.

Serious collectors hoping for the “definitive” version of this beach classic, please be forewarned: MGM has inexplicably released the “edited for television” version rather than the fresh theatrical version! What a disappointment! It seems that years ago when “Beach Blanket Bingo” was shown on ABC, the network gash out a solo sung by Annette titled “I’ll Never Change Him” to allow for more commercial time. When HBO released its VHS version, it was also the edited version and in fact, subsequent reissues by Goodtimes Video and Video Treasures apparently customary the same print. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago when the movie started showing on cable networks such as Cinemax and American Movie Classics that the restored theatrical version finally was seen and for those of us who weren’t lucky enough to contemplate it on the colossal cover, it was quite a surprise that we had been watching an edited version all these years. The song is a bouncy upbeat tune and in my concept, it’s Annette’s best song in the series. In fact, it was even recycled later the same year in “Ski Party” with the title and lyrics slightly changed to “We’ll Never Change ‘em” and this time warbled by Deborah Walley. On the upside, the transfer is crisp and the colors breathtaking in this widescreen edition. But if you want to gawk the recent theatrical version, you’ll unbiased have to be insist to tape it the next time it plays on AMC’s American Pop series.

Beach Blanket Bingo is the best of AIP’s Beach Party films. Unlike the other films in the series, there are precise attempts at some clever tongue and cheek writing here, Annette finally displays some of here phenomenal body, Frankie actually has a tan, and the supporting cast is noteworthy better this time around. Here we have Harvey Lembeck as Erick Von Zipper (what a ample character!), Linda Evans, Marta Kristen, John Ashley, Buster Keaton, Don Rickles and the huge, demented, Timothy Carey.

Director William Asher had Roger Corman’s Poe movie cinematographer Floyd Crosby on this film, making it the best looking of the series. The color is rich, the compositions dynamic and the camera more mobile than usual, giving the film a greater sense of excitement.

Finally, series composer Les Baxter also had a bigger hand in writing and arranging the songs this time around, and they are remarkable better than usual for this series — the title tune is a standout.
